We must hold our government accountable for neglect and violence against vulnerable people, including babies, children, LGBTQs and the chronically ill. Mumps, a virus that spreads through drops in the air or through contact with infected surfaces, sometimes causes outbreaks in places where people are nearby – universities, campsites, sports events. Is it because it is cruelty? Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions admitted that guidelines have been drawn up to prevent people from migrating north along our border. Is it an administrative inertia? After all, it should be easier to arrest large numbers of people in cages than to provide them with comprehensive Community, legal and social support systems. Several independent studies have shown that the detention of immigrants is more expensive than programmes enabling them to integrate into the communities pending asylum decisions. Several children have died from influenza complications under the care of the CBP, but the Trump administration says it will not offer migrants flu shots. There are more humane and cheaper solutions for the mass influx of people arriving at our southern border. Asylum seekers with chronic diseases are seized by CBP staff and do not receive the necessary medical care during detention. We must regain the moral compass of our country and demand that people no longer be detained. On the other hand, it is clear that any stay in prison in the short and long term causes psychological and physical problems, as well as the risk of death. The monitoring of the health and well-being of people arriving at our borders should at least be entrusted to a fully independent regulatory authority.
