This week my patient group on Tuesday and Friday’s group of friends and family will be without the two doctors who usually lead the groups, and without our medical assistant, who plays a crucial role as a confidential consultant and program representative. Positive feedback and appreciation from our Friends and Family group has elevated these experienced patients to the role of mentors, now including families who are trying to help their loved ones get better. Kevin®. Founded in 2004 by Dr. Kevin Fo, Kevin® is a leading online platform where doctors, veterans, nurses, medical students and patients share their vision and tell their stories. Group members can help each other and challenge each other’s self-deception and public apologies, often more effectively than doctors. We listened and after a few months we formed such a group, and now, after a year and a half, the group is led by some of our patients, who have of course already taken over the leadership of the patient group. By sharing their own recovery experiences, they have brought indispensable life to these groups to support them, even when some of the mentors are on vacation. We knew that the most effective way to fight drug abuse was through group work. They share stories and perspectives, travel and offer work, and form a community that remains connected between sessions. Kevin’s Physicians Speaking® is the only purely medical practice. There will be a Lokum doctor and a medical assistant on deck, and I will be present almost as usual at a video conference.
